Preparing to Apply for Study Abroad Awards
1. Investigate the different types of scholarships and fellowships that exist (http://fellowships.rice.edu). Read the criteria for those that interest you and figure out if any of the awards match your academic and/or professional interests.
2. Meet with the Fellowships Office a semester prior to applying (which may be a year before going abroad) to find out how you should prepare and when you should apply.

3. Summer Study Abroad
- Leebron Smyth- summer proposal detailing how the research, internship, or travel will further academic and/or career goals
- Brotzen-well developed and researched summer proposal, need only demonstrate how this experience will benefit personal, academic, or professional life.
- NSEP- limited to science, technology, engineering and mathematic students, 8 weeks or more: cannot study in Western Europe, Canada, Australia, or New Zealand
- Wagoner- expand or build upon the student's undergraduate education towards future academic or professional goals

Funding outside of OFUR:
4. Semester and Year Study Abroad
- CD Broad- One year at Trinity College, Cambridge, UK
- NSEP-semester or 1 year of university study and/or research: cannot study in Western Europe, Canada, Australia, or New Zealand
- Wagoner- summer, semester, or 1 year

Funding outside of OFUR:
- American-Scandinavian Foundation- up to 1 year research or study in Scandinavia: www.amscan.org
5. After Graduation Study Abroad
- Marshall- 2-3 years of study at any British university
- Mitchell-One year at a university in Ireland or Northern Ireland
- Rhodes-2-3 years of study at Oxford
- Churchill- nine months to 1 year at Churchill College, Cambridge
- Fulbright- 1 year of university study and/or research abroad.
- Luce-1 year living and working in Asia
- Watson-1 year abroad, no institutional academic component — you don’t go to a university to study
- Gates Cambridge- graduate students study at Cambridge
- CD Broad- One year at Trinity College, Cambridge, UK
- Leifur Eiriksson- graduate research or study at universities in Iceland
- Whitaker- biomedical engineers, 1 year
